Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso was a pioneer of post-modern Portuguese painting. Before he went to Paris to devote himself fully to painting, he studied architecture in Lisbon. Later, in the French metropolis, he quickly made acquaintances with the city’s most famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Amadeo Modigliani. The German painter and sculptor Otto Freundlich introduced Souza-Cardoso to Expressionism, from which he drew much inspiration for his later work.
