The work of the French painter Odilon Redon is divided into two phases: during his early, black phase, he depicted human fears in gloomy nightmare paintings. Later, in his colourful phase, he began to depict motifs from mythology and nature in a multicoloured, abstract manner. The symbolist’s works have a unique forcefulness that clearly sets him apart from his contemporaries. They appear particularly interesting as wood prints.
