Peter Vilhelm Ilsted was an important Danish artist and genre painter. At the latest after his sister married Vilhelm Hammershøi, Ilsted was strongly influenced by the latter’s artistic style. He is particularly known for his beautiful interiors with expressive, fine figures and motifs. His paintings, for example the works ‘At the Window’ or ‘At the Piano’, typically show quiet life and are kept in subtle colours.
